Grid Connection for Zonnequa Wind Farm


Project Name:  Grid Connection Infrastructure for the Zonnequa Wind Farm, Northern Cape Province

 Applicant:  Genesis Zonnequa Wind (Pty) Ltd

Proposed Activity:  The development of a grid connection solution associated with the Zonnequa Wind Farm.  The grid connection infrastructure associated with the grid connection solution will include the construction of a collector substation (Strandveld Substation), a double-circuit 132kV power line and associated infrastructure including access tracks/roads and laydown areas.

Location:  A 300m wide and 22km long grid connection corridor, located between the authorised Zonnequa Wind Farm and the Gromis Substation, is being assessed.  The corridor is located near Kleinsee and within the Nama Khoi Local Municipality and the Namakwa District Municipality.  The grid connection corridor is located within the northern corridor of the Strategic Transmission Corridors and the Springbok Renewable Energy Development Zone (REDZ), gazetted on 16 February 2018 (GNR113 and GNR114).  The grid connection corridor traverses the following properties:

Basic Assessment Process:  The project is subject to the requirements of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Regulations of 2014 published in terms of Section 24(5) of NEMA. Various aspects of the project are listed as activities in terms of the EIA Regulations, 2014 (as amended), that may have a detrimental impact on the environment.  Savannah Environmental is undertaking the required environmental assessment and public participation process.

The process will also include the submission of Water Use License Applications to the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) as regulated by the National Water Act (Act No. 36 of 1998).

Basic Assessment Report Available for Review and Comment:  The Basic Assessment Report is available for review and comment from Wednesday, 29 May 2019 to Monday, 01 July 2019 and can be viewed at the Kleinsee Public Library, 3rd Avenue, Kleinsee or downloaded from our website (see below). The due date for written comment is Monday, 01 July 2019.
