Establishment of 132kV Grid Connection Infrastructure for the Hyperion Thermal Hybrid Facility Near Kathu, Northern Cape Province
Applicant: Hyperion Solar Development (Pty) Ltd
Proposed Activity: The development of a 132kV overhead power line to connect the authorised Hyperion PV Solar Energy Facility complex and proposed Hybrid Thermal Power Facility to the national grid via the Kalbas substation. The proposed grid connection infrastructure is 7.75km long and includes an assessment corridor of 300m wide.
Location: The proposed 132kV overhead power line will be located approximately 22km north of Kathu within the Gamagara Local Municipality which falls within jurisdiction of the John Taolo Gaetsewe District Municipality, Northern Cape Province and will cross Remainder of the Farm Kathu 465 and Portion 1 of the Farm Selsden 464.
Basic Assessment Process: In terms of Sections 24 and 24D of the National Environmental Management Act (No 107 of 1998), as read with Government Notice R324 – R327, as amended, a Basic Assessment (BA) is required for the Environmental Authorisation of this project. Savannah Environmental is undertaking the required BA and public participation process for the project.
BA Report Available for Review: A BA Report is available for review and comment. The due date for written comment is 21 November 2020.
Public Participation Process: Savannah Environmental (Pty) Ltd has been appointed as the independent environmental consultant responsible for undertaking the BA and Public Participation processes in support of these applications for EA.
