Grid Connection Infrastructure for the Khunab Solar Developments, Northern Cape

Project Name: Khunab Solar Grid Connection

Applicant Name: McTaggarts PV1 (Pty) Ltd

Proposed Activity: The grid connection solution will include specific grid connection infrastructure to cater for the proposed four (4) individual Khunab and Klip Punt solar PV facilities.  The infrastructure to be developed will include the following:

  • Two collector substations;
  • Two switching stations; and
  • A 132 kV single-circuit power line to connect each solar PV facility to the national grid.

Location: The Khunab Solar Grid Connection will traverse the following properties:

  • Portion 3 of the Farm McTaggarts Camp 453;
  • Portion 12 of the Farm Klip Punt 452; and
  • Olyvenhouts Drift Settlement Agricultural Holding 1080

All of the above properties are located within the Kai !Garib and the Dawid Kruiper local municipalities of the greater ZF Mgcawu District Municipality.

Basic Assessment Process: In terms of Sections 24 and 24D of the National Environmental Management Act (No 107 of 1998) and Government Notice R114, as read with Government Notice R324 – R327, as amended, a Basic Impact Assessment is required for the development of the four PV solar facilities and the grid connection infrastructure.  Savannah Environmental (Pty) Ltd is undertaking the required basic assessment and public participation process for the project.
