132kV Transmission Infrastructure for the 450WM RMPP

Establishment of 132kV Transmission Infrastructure for the 450MW RMPPP in Alton, KwaZulu-Natal Province

Applicant:  Phinda Power Producers (Pty) Ltd

Proposed Activity: The development of a 132kV underground cables and switching station to connect the proposed 450MW RMPP to the national grid via the existing unutilised Bayside powerlines. The proposed underground cables are approximately 2km long and includes an assessment corridor of 50m-100m. The proposed 132kV switching station is located within the existing Eskom servitude approximately 2km south of the 450MW RMPP site.

Location: The proposed 132kV overhead power line will be located approximately 2km south of the proposed 450MW RMPP located within Alton, Richards Bay. The project site is situated in the City of uMhlathuze Local Municipality which falls within jurisdiction of the King Cetshwayo District Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal Province.  The proposed 132kV transmission infrastructure alternatives will traverse the following properties:

Basic Assessment Process: In terms of Sections 24 and 24D of the National Environmental Management Act (No 107 of 1998), as read with Government Notice R324 – R327, as amended, a Basic Assessment (BA) is required to be undertaken in support of the application for the Environmental Authorisation of this project. Savannah Environmental is undertaking the required BA and public participation process for the project.

BA Report Available for Review: A BA Report is available for review and comment.  The report can be viewed at xxxxxx from 13 November 202014 December 2020.  The due date for written comment is 14 December 2020.
